69th Golden Globes Recap

On January 15, 2012, the 69th Golden Globe Awards took place.  These awards are given to recognize great achievement in film and television as chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.  The show was hosted by popular British comedian, Ricky Gervais.  Since I am the film critic for The Breeze, I will mainly be focusing on the awards for film.

Winning the most awards with three wins and six nominations was the modern silent film, The Artist.  It took home the awards for best musical or comedy, best actor in a musical or comedy (Jean Dujardin), and best original score (Ludovic Bource).  While I have not seen this film, it has received much acclaim from critics and audiences alike.  Another film that I have not seen, but won the second-most awards was The Descendents.  It had two wins and five nominations; best drama, and best actor in a drama (George Clooney).

Other big awards were Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady) for best actress in a drama, and Michelle Williams (My Week with Marilyn) for best actress in a musical or comedy.  Out of all of the films that won, I’ve only seen two.  The movie Hugo was nominated for three awards and won best director (Martin Scorsese).   Also, The Adventures of Tintin won best animated film.  Towards the end of the show, actor, Morgan Freeman, received an award for lifetime achievement.

While some great movies didn’t win an award, there is always the Academy Awards which will take place February 26, 2012.  For a full list of winners, click here.
