Mostly Harmless Book Review

Don’t panic! This review is mostly harmless!

In this intergalactic adventure, Ford, Arthur, and Trillian return for some of the strangest events of their lives. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy company is now owned by a familiar enemy, and it’s up to Ford to save the universe from the dangers of the new Guide. Arthur is trying to find a place to live, and after a few failures, he accidentally finds a great place. All is well until a girl visits him and alerts Arthur that she is his daughter. Trillian is trying to work on her career as an intergalactic reporter. Due to strange and unlikely events, these 3 adventurers get intertwined into one huge intergalactic adventure, where anything can happen.

Of all the books so far in this series, this one is one of my favorites. Not only does this book continue to have Adams’s outrageous humor, but it also is even more surprising and plot twisting than any of the other books in this series. When something surprising and random happens, Adams doesn’t gradually build up the suspense to the moment. Instead he just comes right out and says it abruptly. It comes out of nowhere and when you always least expect it.

Another thing about this book that is amazing, is that Trillian returns and has a much bigger role in this book than she has had recently. Adams also brings up characters that he hasn’t brought up in a long time. It was great to see many of the important and necessary characters back and reunited!

This was supposed to be the last book in the series but the ending was abrupt and depressing. Adams always wanted to end this series on a happy note, but he died before he got the chance to. Thankfully, Eoin Colfer used Adams ideas that he was working on for a happy ending, and Colfer wrote “And Another Thing…” which is officially the last book in the series. “And Another Thing…” is an alternative and happy ending to “Mostly Harmless” and the whole series. I hope you read this book and enjoy it as much as I did!
