On Thursday March 31, 2022, 62 students involved in the PLTW Biomedical Science program attended a day-long field trip to the Prima Care Institute in Fall River. During this field trip, students got to hear from practicing physicians, healthcare workers, and other professionals involved in the field of sciences about their careers. Victor Machado, the executive director at the PC Institute for Medical Education and father of an SBRHS student, facilitated the trip. At the PC Institute, students learned how to perform a simple suture from a practicing physician’s assistant, practice electrosurgery on a piece of meat and an orange, practice arthroscopic surgery on a melon, use high speed ortho drills on eggs, and simulate emergency care intubation and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (led by emergency care physician Dr.Charles Posner). Additionally, students had the opportunity to observe a shoulder repair surgery, performed by orthopedic surgeon Dr.Mena Mesiha, on a cadaver while simultaneously learning more about the anatomy of the shoulder. Students learned an immense amount from the experience and are extremely grateful for the opportunity provided by the PC Institute!
