Do you like conspiracy theories? Well, have you ever heard of the Mandela Effect? The Mandela Effect is a well-known conspiracy theory that refers to a phenomenon in which a large group of people share false memories of past events. Some believe that it is caused by parallel or alternative universes spilling into our own, while others explain it as only the a failure of collective memory. Another possible explanation is the holographic simulation theory, which hypothesizes that the universe is actually a projected, living hologram, and everything is only an illusion. Finally, some even believe the collective memory failure is caused by time travelers accidentally changing small things in our world.

There are many examples of the Mandela Effect, where people remember things differently than they are. A popular theory that was the origin of the name, is the theory about Nelson Mandela. Many people had believed that Nelson Mandela died in prison long before he actually did. When news had been released that he was getting out of prison, many people were confused after remembering his death. Another example, and a very popular one, is the Berenstain Bears where many people believed, and were sure, that it was spelled with an E in place of the A (Berenstein). Do you remember the Monopoly guy with the spectacle on one eye? Well, he actually never had a spectacle, and many people believed he did. A similar example is that of Looney Tunes, where there was a huge controversy over whether it was “toons” or “tunes.” It is, of course, spelt the latter way. Finally, in the movie Snow White everyone always quotes the evil queen saying “mirror mirror on the wall.” Although this is one of the most popularly quoted sayings, it is in fact wrong; the evil queen actually says “magic mirror on the wall.” As you can see, there are all different kinds of examples of this phenomenon. People can remember pictures, words, and even sounds the wrong way.

For years the Mandela Effect has baffled millions all around the world, and yet we are still unsure of many things aspects of it. How long has the Mandela Effect been around, even before there was a real name for it? Why does this phenomenon even happen? Is there any way to prevent it from happening to us? We may never know the answers, but I have a feeling the Mandela Effect will carry on for years until forgotten.
