Day Four of Breezemas: The Best Hot Chocolate Recipe

Lily Botelho

Put away your Swiss Miss packets or any other sad hot chocolate powder you may have because this recipe is about to change your life. No one should have to stomach another cup of thin, watery, bland hot cocoa. It’s just a crime. Try out this tried and true recipe, from my kitchen to yours, and taste some hot chocolate that is going to blow your mind.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 4 cups of milk — the higher the fat content the better (Whole or 2%) although any milk works.
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ¼ granulated sugar
  • ½ cup chocolate chips or chopped chocolate
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • OPTIONAL: Whipped cream or marshmallows for topping

SUPPLIES:

  • Saucepan
  • Whisk
  • Mugs for serving
  1. Add milk, cocoa powder, and sugar into your saucepan over medium heat, whisking constantly, until warm to the touch.
    1. DO NOT BOIL THE MILK!! Keep the heat low and the milk moving (by whisking) to prevent this. Milk has a tendency to boil the second you look away so keep a close eye on it.
  2. Once the milk is warmed, add your chocolate chips and whisk until they are fully melted and combined.
  3. Once the chips are fully distributed in the milk, finish by whisking in your vanilla extract.
  4. Serve immediately and top with whipped cream, marshmallows, or both if you’re feeling fancy
